Start with contribution, not an ACOS benchmark
Break-even ACOS is a unit-economics boundary. Begin with the net selling price that the order actually earns, then subtract product cost, inbound freight, marketplace fees, fulfillment, expected returns cost and every other variable cost incurred before advertising. The amount left is the most that can be spent on ads before that order reaches zero contribution.
Category averages can be useful context, but they cannot set your target. Two products in the same category can have different referral fees, fulfillment tiers, return rates, coupons and landed costs. A target copied from a benchmark can therefore be unprofitable for one ASIN and unnecessarily restrictive for another.
- Use a recent realized selling price after discounts.
- Reconcile fees against settlement data rather than a list-price estimate.
- Refresh the calculation when price, fees, freight or return rates change.
